Love in Old Age by Sara L. Russell

If only he had said it all before,
When it seemed everything would stay the same
Through times of secret signs and quiet rapport,
Times when his warm blood quickened into flame,
When she could shimmer, seeming unaware
Of how her light reflected in his eyes;
How sunlight lit a halo round her hair,
Her tender looks, the meanings of her sighs.
He tried to say it year by fleeting year,
In glances, chances squandered, silent words,
In peace and war times, changing atmosphere -
Now thoughts are scattering like frightened birds.
He sits beside her, watching moorhens fly.
He likes her, but cannot remember why.
